To 11g or not to 11g? It’s Time to Answer the Question

The Time Has Come to Answer the Question

Woman Making Decision in front of Computer Screen

To 11g or not to 11g?

That is the question on the minds of any CEO, CIO, COO, or other executive whose organization still owns Oracle 10gR3. The real decision to make is whether to upgrade to 11g or to migrate to another ECM platform. It’s a question that’s been around for several years and a question that many organizations have already answered. If yours is an organization that has not yet made this decision, this blog post may help in your decision-making process.

A Little Background

For twenty years, MTS Software Solutions has sold and supported Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software. One of the first ECM products that we offered was Optika. Fast forward 20 years, Stellent buys Optika, Oracle buys Stellent, rebrands the product into something called Oracle Imaging & Process Management (or Oracle I/PM 10gR3), and now you have customers who are, by default, Oracle customers with a legacy ECM product.

Several years ago, Oracle announced 11g, an entirely new ECM product platform built on an entirely new architecture. Therefore, Oracle I/PM 10gR3 customers were not faced with a clear and straightforward upgrade path. Instead, they would have to convert legacy data and documents, rebuild workflows, redesign security, redevelop retention plans, etc. In essence, they were faced with a migration – a migration to 11g or a migration to another platform. Many executives have already made the decision to migrate away from Oracle and towards OnBase by Hyland. In fact, MTS Software Solutions has successfully migrated over 20 Stellent/iBPM customers to OnBase.

To learn more about why it makes sense to migrate to OnBase, read this.

Legacy Software from a Legacy Company

You don’t have to take it from us!

Take it from Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce.com, a company that is dominating not only the CRM space but also the “cloud”. In this clip from Jim Cramer’s “Mad Money”, he says, “I think Oracle is a great company, but it’s a great company of the past.” He goes on to say, “This is a legacy company…a company that has delivered great software to companies in the past…in history. So, they’re trying to bring that history forward, but without a new architecture.”

This is a legacy company…a company that has delivered great software to companies in the past…in history. So, they’re trying to bring that history forward, but without a new architecture.
